Large Distant Mountain Stone
This is a large Distant mountain suiseki (Toyama-ishi or Enzan-seki) that I collected myself in northern California many years ago. I still remember the feeling when I turned the stone over and saw the shape for the first time. What an amazing feeling of discovery and then a humble awareness of the power of nature and the fleeting quality of human time.
Details:
This viewing stone falls squarely within the Japanese suiseki aesthetic. Suiseki aesthetics have evolved over several hundred years to a fine level. Although there are a few different schools in modern Japanese stone appreciation, Japanese suiseki still looks and feels different from stone appreciation in other countries. This stone would be welcome in a Japanese suiseki exhibit.
The stone is 13” long by 6.5” wide by 4” tall. This is an ideal size for a large suiseki; it can still (barely) be carried in one hand. The color is dark; dark stone allows the viewer the maximum opportunity for contemplation without distraction. The daiza is hardwood and was commissioned from Sean Smith. Note the excellent placement of the feet over the heavy points in the stone’s shape and at each end when viewed from the front. Many daiza have poorly placed feet that detract from the feel of the stone. Mr. Matsuura of the Nippon Suiseki Association deemed Sean the best daiza carver outside of Japan.
The stand IS NOT included with the sale (neither is the beer). Also made by Sean Smith, the stand is a great complement for the display of the stone. I can include his contact information if you would like him to make you a stand for this stone.
Description:
The stone displays great balance and power. The top down view shows the proper placement of the peak and great balance from all four sides (no awkward angles or “bad” side). The front of the stone curves towards the viewer, drawing one in for further contemplation. For scale, I included a shot with a beer bottle. This stone would wonderfully complement a large alpine bonsai in an exhibition.
